STOKE Gabriel must have used up one of their get-out-of-jail cards for the season when their game against Ashburton was rained off.

For Stoke had struggled to reach 148 all out and Ashes were 60 for two in reply with 27 overs left when it rained.

“Put it this way, they were a lot more disappointed about coming off than we were,” said Stoke captain Andy Lockyer.

Tom Durman (2-29), Marcus West (3-16) and Ashley Harvey (3-32) were Stoke’s tormentors with the ball.

At 50 for seven an early finish was on the cards, but Anthony Scott dug in for 74 and wrung a couple of decent partnerships out of the tail-enders.

In a tenth wicket stand of 36, Jamie Harris made one not out!

Jack Tolley had both Ashburton wickets to fall.

Bideford were given a battering at Kingsbridge, where they were crushed by 136 runs.

Kingsbridge racked up 231 for eight in 46 overs, starting off with a stand of 84 between James Fletcher (37) and James Westlake (50). Chris Bowles (47) and Bhanu deSolva (39no) weighed in.

Bideford, who were without suspended captain James Ford, were skittled out for 95 in reply.

Matt Shepherd’s 18 not out was the only score of note for Bideford. Neil Peach (3-42) was the only bowler to take more than two wickets.

IPPLEPEN paid a high price for letting Clyst St George off the hook as it cost them the C Division leadership.

The Pens had reached 170 for nine with Sam DeFriend (37no), Matt Quartley (37) and Jack Lewis (23) all contributing.

Paul Richardson (3-51) and Chris Cook (3-39) were Clyst’s man wicket-takers.

Clyst then slumped to 48 for nine in reply as Keith Wakeham (5-29) and Joe Abbott (3-39) ran through them.

A last-wicket stand of 56 unbroken between Chris Ferro (36) and Mark Johnson (23no) got Clyst up to 104 for nine with five overs to go. Then it rained.

The new leaders are Chagford, who just did enough at Ottery before the heavens opened to shade the game.

Ottery St Mary felt they were robbed by the weather when they were rained off against Chagford with 13 needed to win.

However, as Chagfofrd only needed two wickets to win the game themselves, Ottery’s claim is disputable.

Billy Searle (33) was the only Chagford batter to master Ottery bowlers Rob Johns (5-38) and George Biggs (3-27).

Searle (4-35) backed up by Jake Barber (2-18) and Del Lammonby (2-37) then had Ottery 105 for eight with top scorer Biggs back in the hutch for 38.

With 14 overs to go, Ottery skipper Jody Clements knew where his money lay.

“The batsmen in were Mark Woodman, who used to play for Devon, and my brother Alex who has scored league 50s in the past,” said Clements.

“With so many overs left, had we applied ourselves there is no reason why we couldn’t have won.”

CLYST Hydon were rained off on the chase at Ivybridge where their target was 241 to win.

Andy Johnson made a century – he and Gareth Andrews clocked up 151 for the second wicket – in a total of 240 for five.

Hydon were 37 for two in the 16th over when rain stopped play.
