Lammonby building for the future

CHAGFORD have a clear set of objectives for the season ahead – and they don’t include promotion.

It has been a hectic close season at the War Memorial Ground with players coming and going on a regular basis.

Out are Billy Searle to Exeter, Gary Sizmur (Lewdown) Neil Roberts due to a long-term shoulder injury, Jacob Baber (Hatherleigh) and Henry Gordon-Lennox, who has moved to East Devon.

Searle – only 16 - took 31 wickets and notched 274 runs in 2012. As a Devon age-group player he was always going to move on sooner rather than later.

Going to Exeter, where Chagford skipper Del Lammonby is a revered old boy, made sense for all concerned.

“Exeter weren’t the only club interested in Billy, but they were the best bet for him,” said Lammonby.

“Exeter have the set up to bring Billy on and give him the best playing opportunities.”

Incomers are Divan Marais – Chudleigh’s overseas player last season who scored nearly 500 league runs at an average in the high 30s – Tom Edginton (Abbotskerswell) and John Wright from Lustleigh.

Wright – a schoolboy international hockey player – gives it a whack and also bowls a bit of brisk medium pace.

That’s a lot of comings and going, which explains why Lammonby is relaxed about the season ahead.

“This year is about giving our youngsters a go and building on last season when were never far away from the top of the table,” said Lammonby.
