PREMIER champions Sidmouth have some gaps to fill in their squad before the new season starts.
Gone from last season are Devon captain Josh Bess, who was the player of the year in the Devon League in 2014, opening bowler Dan Babula and miserly seamer Scott Barlow.
Bess is working in Australia – that’s 684 runs and 16 wickets gone from last season, 46-wicket pacer Babula has signed for Thames Valley club Chesham and Barlow has moved to Kent and signed for Bromley.
Off-spinner Charlie Miles has been wintering in Perth, scoring runs and taking wickets in second grade cricket, but should be back for the start of the season.
Sidmouth skipper Will Murray is less certain about Will Sobczak, who is also out in Western Australia and threatening not to return.
“I have several irons in the fire – including an overseas player – but nothing is confirmed yet,” said Murray.
“We have been in touch with an overseas player to replace Dan, but although he has agreed to join us we have not heard from him for a few weeks.
“Until I hear he has bought the air tickets, I will keep looking.
“Will Sobczak (left) went out to Australia last year and clearly likes it out there. I hope he comes back, but I am not expecting it.
“The picture should be clearer in a week or two – it needs to be as our first pre-season game is away to Werrington on April 11.
