As part of the Chance to Shine programme, the Devon finals for this year’s Chance to Compete competition took place recently, at a very hot and sunny Countess Wear CC.
This is the second year the 8-a-side hard ball competition has been played, with local secondary schools entering an under 13's team to play knock out matches to decide who will represent Devon in the SW regional finals.
Last year’s pilot of the national competitions involved state schools where very few had played any cricket when Chance to Shine was originally established, and even fewer had the opportunity to play against other schools competitively. The resounding success has meant even more schools are now getting involved.

Tiverton, Queen Elizabeth’s, St Lukes and ISCA all took part in the Devon finals day, with both semi finals being closely fought, competitive matches to start the day. Tiverton & Isca both made it through to the final match, where Tiverton batted first and scored 70 from their 8 overs. Their tight bowling and accurate fielding then ensured that a fighting Isca side were unable to reach their target despite valiant efforts to push the score along.
Being victorious on the day, Tiverton then progressed to the next round as Devon’s representatives and played in the regional finals which took place last week at Weston Super Mare CC. They faced teams from Cornwall, Wales, Somerset, Gloucestershire & Wiltshire and finished in a creditable 4th place.
Mr Adams from Tiverton School commented “We had a great time at the Devon finals, and were very proud to come away as the winners to represent our County. Going on to then face teams from the other SW areas, our fielding was impressive but unfortunately we were a bit conservative when it came to batting, and just didn’t get enough runs on the board.
“We thoroughly enjoyed the two days, and it was a fantastic experience. Thanks to Trevor for organising the Devon competition which got us through to the Regionals, something we’ll definitely be looking to do again next year.”
