TWO stalwarts of Devon cricket have been made life members of the county club for services rendered over more than 50 years.
Jack Davey played for Devon as a youngster in the early 1960s before embarking on a 13-season professional career with Gloucestershire.
He was elected as a life member at the county club’s recent annual meeting, as was former player, chairman and now president Roger Moylan-Jones.
Moylan-Jones and Davey both moved away from Devon after their early careers, but came back to play significant roles for the county club.
From playing at Tavistock, where his late father Eric was a driving force in the club, Davey went on to play in Lord’s finals for Gloucestershire in front of 20,000-plus crowds.
When his playing days with Gloucestershire were over, Davey returned to Devon to play in a couple of games. He later became team manager during the captaincy of Hiley Edwards and helped steer Devon to their first Lord’s final in 1991.
Davey worked in the licensed trade, running pubs near Exeter and Newton Abbot, before taking over the management of the club bar at Exeter Chiefs’ old home on the County Ground.
In retirement 69-year-old Davey lives near Exeter and remains involved in cricket as a trustee of the David Shepherd Cricket Trust, which was set up in memory of his former Gloucestershire and Devon team-mate to encourage young cricketers.
Moylan-Jones started his cricket career with Paignton before a career in the Navy took him away from Devon.
He fitted in Devon games between 1959-1975 when his Forces commitments allowed.
During his time in the Navy he captained the Combined Services and played against the touring Pakistanis (1974) and the New Zealanders (1983).
When Moylan-Jones left the Navy and retired to live in Torquay, he took over as Devon CCC chairman from Derek Cole and held the post for from 1995-2010.
Moylan-Jones, who represented the Recreational Game on the English Cricket Board while Devon chairman, is now county club president.
Both life memberships were proposed by current chairman Geoff Evans – who has been a player and official for more than 40 years himself - and agreed unanimously by members at the meeting, held at Ashford’s offices in Exeter.
Said Evans: I have been fortunate that much of my time in office has been spent in company with Roger and Jack and together with my personal thanks to them for their comradeship and commitment to the cause of Devon Cricket it is my privilege to nominate them for this honour.”
Devon CCC annual meetings are sedate affairs that generally rubber stamp the actions of the executive.
The meeting made minor adjustments to the committee and also welcomed on board new main sponsors in Tolchards and Annings, the licensed trade wholesaler from Torquay.
