Cornwood stuck fast at the bottom

PROBLEMS really are mounting up for Cornwood, who remain anchored at the foot of the Premier table in the wake of a six-wicket defeat at Torquay.

Torquay were in all sorts of trouble themselves barely a month ago having dropped into the bottom two, but have beaten all the sides around them to clamber away from immediate danger.

A win over Sandford was followed by another against Heathcoat before the quickfire win over Cornwood that opened up a 27-point gap between Torquay and the drop zone.

Cornwood haven’t won since the first day of the summer and need to take a leaf out of Torquay’s book by beating the teams around them to dodge the relegation reaper.

Right now the Corns are 18 points adrift with high-flying Exeter to face this Saturday.

Cornwood were skittled out for 73 in just 29.4 overs with Mark Horwell (18) and Steve Lambert (16) the only batters with much stickabilty.

Duncan Boase’s ton in the 2nd XI win over Ipplepen is unlikely to escape the attention of the Cornwood selectors when they pick a side to face Exeter.

Torquay’s match-day pro Max Waller (3-10) was on a hat-trick after dispatching Jason Hall and Ben Warren.

Nick Watkin (2-17) took two in two at the end to remove Elliot Staddon and Adam Goodliffe.

Earlier, Mitch Pugh (3-16) had decimated the middle order.

Cornwood pro Jackson Thompson missed out again: he made six from eight balls before being caught in the slips off Joe Thompson.

Torquay had the runs knocked off inside 22 overs, led there by Watkin with 41 not out.

Goodliffe (2-16) picked up a couple of wickets late in the day on 71 and 73 when it was all over bar the shouting anyway.

Torquay skipper Justin Yau said: “Our best performance yet and it was great to see our bowlers put so much pressure on Cornwood.

“Nick Watkin had a superb game, picking up two deserved wickets and batting sensibly to see us home.

We are looking to keep our run going as confidence in the camp is now high.

“We just need to take each game as it comes and to continue picking up our points.”
