Dawson eases Exmouth into T20 final

By CONRAD SUTCLIFFE at the COUNTY GROUND

BOB Dawson hit a half-century as Exmouth were made to work every inch of the way for a six wicket win over Cornwod in the first semi-final of the Servicemaster Devon T20 competition.

Cornwood were all out for 120 in the last of their 20 overs - skipper Elliot Staddon making a top score of 32 to haul them round from an unimpressive 46 for six.

Exmouth had problems of their own after Seb Benton, David Lye and Sandy Allen all went cheaply and at 64 for four needed 57 to win from their last seven overs.

Opener Dawson was still here though and Cornwood never looked like shifting him.

The turning point came in the 17th over when Dawson and captain Gary Chappell took 15 off Robin Dart – Dawson nailing four fours in the process.

The target came down from 31 from four to 12 off three and it was a no contest.

Dawson reached 67 not out from 49 balls with 48 in boundaries. He was at the other end when Chappell lofted Matt Butterworth over mid-wicket for six to win the match with eight balls to go.

Earlier, Cornwood had laboured against tight bowling from Exmouth’s Trevor Anning – four for 14 from four overs – and David Lye, who send down four overs for just 10 runs.

After Jackson Thompson (18) and Ben Warren (20) had gone, Cornwood were 54 for seven when Dart went out to join Staddon.

Their stand of 35 ensured no easy ride for Exmouth on the chase.
