IPPLEPEN had a bit too much firewpower for Uplyme in the Corinthian Cup final as they ran out 82-run winners
Pens put 149 for six on the board in their 16 eight-ball overs – opener Tom Dyer top scoring with 42.
Uplyme found it hard coping with Pens’ Kiwi left-armer Caleb Gaylard, who took the first five wickets to fall at a run each! Bruce Maltby hit his first ball from Gaylard for four, leaving him with match figures of five for nine in three overs.
Uplyme were all out for 67 with three overs to go, five of the batsmen failing to register a run between them.
Dyer and Matt Nicholls (10) got Pens away to a flying start, knocking up 49 in the first six overs.
Sam deFriend was Dyer’s running mate as Pens added 24 in a hurry for the second wicket.
After Dyer fell to Rhys Davies (2-41), deFriend motored along largely untroubled by the bowling to 41 off 29 balls..
By the time Davies snared deFriend the score had reached 125 for five and there had been some big overs along the way.
Davies went for 14 in one over and 19 in his next while Charles Warner went for 13 in another.
Uplyme got the best start imaginable as opener Jed Whittington clouted Pens’ captain Keith Wakehem for a six then a four. Ouch! Wakeham got over it to collect the cup from Stuart Munday later
Whittington biffed 29 of 20 balls, as Uplyme reached 21 for three after three overs. Then Gaylard got to work on the rest of the batting.
A change of bowling made little difference as Paul Thomas and Steve Bowden had a wicket each in their first overs.
Thomas winkled out most of the rest of the batting before Wakeham brought himself back at the end to dispatch last man Warner.
Ipplepen 149-6 (T Dyer 42, S deFriend 41; S Batey 2-26, R Davies 2-41), Uplyme 67 (J Whittington 29, N Dinnison 15; C Gaylard 5-9, P Thomas 3-8), Ipplepen bt Uplyme by 82 runs.
