The triumphant Feniton team surround captain Mark Kngdon after winning the Corinthian CupFENITON ended a long wait to get their hands on the Corinthian Cup when they beat Alphington by 22 runs in the final at Whimple.
The 16-eight-ball over competition for all teams below the Francis Clark League A Division.
Feniton traveled to the four-team finals day of the competition as the under-dogs given their status as a D Division side, up against Stoke Gabriel, Alphington or Ivybridge, who all play in higher divisions.
After a good all-round show to see off C Division Stoke Gabriel in their morning semi-final, Feniton took on B Division Alphington.
Batting first Feniton posted what looked a below-par 119-7 with the skipper top scoring with 42. Brian Cann (16) and Graham Tucker (13) were the other notable scorers.
If that was a match-losing total, no one thought to tell Russ Witton who served up a stunning spell with the ball.
The long-standing Feniton stalwart sent down four overs and claimed one wicket for a miserley four runs.
At the other end Charlie Selley claimed 4-14 and the Alpha’s reply floundered on 97-8, leaving Feniton the winners by 22 runs.
Success was all the sweeter for Feniton skipper Mark Kingdon who had previously played in three of the competitions finals and ended up a loser each time!
A delighted Kingdon said: “At the start of the season gaining promotion was the primary objective and we remain in the hunt to go up.
“To net silverware as well makes it all the more special.
“For me be a winner is smashing.
“The last time we won this competition was when it was the Devon Junior Cup and that was back in 1985.”
