TAVISTOCK CC lost one of its stalwarts last week when former captain Mike Crocker died. He was 64.Crocker had been attached to Tavistock for more than 40 years as a player, official and latterly bar steward.
He first joined Tavistock in 1965 from near neighbours Whitchurch Wayfarers, having been persuaded to switch clubs by his friend Stuart Munday.
Munday, now Tavistock’s president, had been a football colleague of Crocker’s at Tavistock Town and felt he as capable of playing at a higher level of cricket.
Crocker went on to captain the 1st and 2nd XI sides at Tavistock before retiring from the game to run the bar, which he did for 15 seasons.
‘Mike's commitment to the club was top class and he will be impossible to replace,’ said Munday.
Andrew Jarman, the Tavistock chairman, added his own personal tribute.
‘For players, members and all who knew him. this is a very sad occasion,’ said Jarman.
‘Mike has been an integral and vital part of Tavistock Cricket Club for nearly 40 years, working tirelessly behind the scenes to keep things functioning.
He spent many hours working on the upkeep of the club, ordering stock, keeping the place in good order and generally making himself available whenever there was work to be done.
‘He was well known for his banter and was always ready to share his opinion on subjects close to his heart, especially cricket matters and, of course, his beloved Manchester United.
‘The gap that is left within the club by his death, will be almost impossible to fill, and certainly not by one person.’
A former employee of Devonport Dockyard – he was a senior shipwright - Crocker is survived by his wife Jenny and children from a previous marriage.
‘The club sends it's condolences to Jenny and Mike’s family,’ said Jarman.
Mike Crocker’s funeral will take place at St Eustachius Church in Tavistock this Wednesday (August 8) at noon.
Friends and family are welcome to raise a glass in memory of Mike back at the club from 6pm onwards.
