PAIGNTON squeezed into the second round of the Devon KO Cup with a skin-of-the-teeth one-wicket win at Torquay.Torquay’s prospects didn’t look good after George Benton (4-16) and Brady Barends (2-24) had them reeling at 24 for four.
Joe Thompson (31no) and Mark Gilmour (28) put on 52 for the fifth wicket, then it all went wrong again.
Torquay were bowled out for 93 with Connor Ashworth (3-14) joining in the wicket taking.
Paignton started disastrously and found themselves 37 for seven after an early going over from Gilmour (4-31), Aqeel Ahmed and Ian Baker, who had to stop bowling due to a side strain.
Mark Ashworth (27no) and Rob Shergold (14) got the target down and Connor Ashworth was in at the end when the winning runs were struck in the 29th over.
There were no such dramas at Exmouth where Bovey Tracey motored into the last eight by seven wickets.
Exmouth’s total of 144 for nine always looked below par and so it turned out as Bovey knocked it off with more than seven overs to go.
Skipper Richard Baggs faced 116 balls making Exmouth’s top score of 66. Next best with 24 was Richard Arnold, who has just returned to the club from a spell with Woodbury.
Chris Bradley (4-12) was the pick of the Bovey bowlers.
Bovey lost captain Peter Bradley when he was trapped lbw by Trevor Anning in the first over, but Sam Wyatt-Haines (28) and Ben Ayres (65) more than made amends with a stand of 78.
After Wyatt-Haines went, Neil Hancock (17no) and Ayres knocked off another 61, reducing the target to six to win, which was a formality.
Exeter's 269 for eight against Plympton proved too many for the visitors, who were all out for 176 in reply.
