Griffiths and Bess hit half centuries as Sidmouth speed up
BOVEY Tracey are chasing 181 to win in the final of the Devon Senior Cp after holding Sidmouth to 180 for six on the Fortfield today.

It was painfully slow going for the first 30 overs as Sidmouth scratched around to reach 99 for two.

Anthony Griffiths and Luke Bess upped the tempo in the last quarter of the game having come together when Josh Bess was the third man out.

Griffiths finished with 66 off 104 balls with four fours and two sixes – one on to the croquet lawn and the other into the car park of the Belmont hotel.

Sidmouth’s problems had started early when they lost Liam Lewis and Matt Cooke for just 11 runs on the board.

Lewis went slashing outside off-stump at Neil Hancock and was caught off the edge by Charlie Carter.

Cooke unfurled the off-drive to Peter Bradley and was caught low down on mid-off by Delon Mullins.

Griffiths and Josh Bess put on 88 for the third wicket, but it was slow going at times with the Bovey bowlers in miserly mood.

Hancock’s first six overs were particularly means as he only went for five runs.

With scoreboard pressure building Bess set off from the non-strikers’ end for a quick single, but was sent back by Griffiths.

Carter’s throw reached the bowler’s end before Bess did and the Devon all-rounder was gone for exactly 50

Luke Bess made 25 in a stand of 59 with Griffiths which occupied just seven overs. He was bowled by Hancock trying to sweep.

In the last three overs the wickets tiumbled as Sidmouth hit out and got out.

Sam Anderson dispatched his first ball four, but only added a single before hitting Mullins up in the air.

Griffiths finally went at 167: Hancock taking the catch at extra-cover off Peter Bradley.

Nick Gingell and Zac Bess put on 13 in the six balls left after Griffiths went

Pick of the bowlers with two wickets each were Mullins and Hancock.
