ENGLAND Lions fast bowler Jamie Overton was the guest of honour at the Devon Cricket Board youth awards staged at Exeter Chiefs conference centre.

Overton, who was made it into the full one-day squad for the end-of-season Ashes series but didn’t get a game, handed out scores of awards to the next generation of players, all of whom would love to walk in his footsteps.

The former North Devon player who, along with twin Craig plays for Somerset, also took part in a lively question-and-answer session with members of the county youth squads.

Master of ceremonies Mike Dibble looked back on a successful season for Devon in most age-groups, and highlighted the achievements of youth system graduates Heather Knight and Jamie Overton in playing for England.

The U17 girls reached the National T20 finals, where they finished runners-up, while the U17 Boys were semi-finalists in the ECB 50-over competition.

Bovey Tracey’s rising star Sam Wyatt-Haines (pictured, left) won the U17 player of the year award and was also the team’s batsman of the year.

Wyatt-Haines, who attends Blundell’s School in Tiverton, was training with Nottinghamshire last season having been talent spotted in 2012 when he was the U16s’ and U17s’ player of the year.

Sam hasn’t had as much contact with Notts as he would have liked because of the distances involved, so with their agreement he will be with Somerset next season,” said dad Richard Wyatt-Haines.

Abbotskerswell’s Hugo Whitlock was named U17s bowler of the year while clubmate Toby Codd collected the U15 District Cup won by the South Devon side.

South Devon performed the treble in the District competitions with the U12s and U13s winning their tournaments as well.

Bovey Tracey’s Ben Steer was named bowler of the year at U15 level. He played a handful of games in the 1st XI during 2013. Steer’s clubmate Chris Yabsley took the bowling honours at
U13 level.

And on a good night for the Bovey Tracey club Ellie Ingham-Hill (pictured, right with Jamie Overton) was the U13 girls player of the year.

Chudleigh’s Jack Thomas was a B Division regular for his club side as well as U16 bowler of the year.

The Medlock brothers – Luke and Rory – flew the flag for Paignton on the honours front, winning U11 batsman and U10 bowler of the year respectively.

Sidmouth wicketkeeper-batsman Dan Powell was batsman of the year in the 16s team.

His highlight was making a century against Glamorgan at Sofia Gardens in Cardiff.

Dom Bess, another of Sidmouth’s stars of the future, was player of the year.

Harvey Sergeant of Sidmouth was U14 batsman and player of the year.

Lower down the age goups Tom Lammonby, son of former Exeter skipper Glenn Lammonby, was the U13s batsman and player of the year.

It wasn’t just the big clubs whose players were honoured: Ben Sapiecha of Countess Wear as the U12s player of the year.

Ben Green of Exeter was batsman and player of the year at Devon U15 level. He played 1st XI cricket for the city side when school commitments allowed last summer.

Green, who could not attend the ceremony, also won the Buller Bowl for the youth-player of the year across all age groups.

One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the Brian Hayter Cup, awarded for services to youth cricket, which went to Alan Swift.

Swift, a retired teacher, has coached or managed the boys’ U15 side since 1999 and was largely responsible for starting the successful
Development Squad tours to South Africa, which have been running for a decade.

The Sally Ashman Cup for the outstanding player at U10s-U11s went to Sam Read of Clyst St George.
