GLOUCESTERSHIRE have included Kiwi one-day star Rob Nicol in their side for tomorrow’s (Friday) T20 challenge match against Devon at Cornwood (4pm).The game is a joint benefit for Gloucestershire’s long-serving former England A player Alex Gidman and the David Shepherd Cricket Foundation.
The foundation was set up in2009 in memory of Shepherd, the former Test match umpire who started out as a player with Devon before turning professional with Gloucestershrie in 1965.
Shepherd scored a century against Oxford University on his Gloucestershire debut and went on to play more than 450 games before retiring in 1979 to take up umpiring,
Shepherd died in 2009 and the foundation named after him aims to develop Devon’s next generation of cricketers though specialist coaching.
Nicol, who joined Gloucestershire midway through this season has been making a name for himself in one-day cricket as a hard-hitting batsman, particularly in T20 cricket.
The Gloucestershrie side includes seven players who turned out in the County Championship game against Hampshire.
Devon have run into some of them before, among them Dan Housego who assisted Berkshire while with Middlesex.
Other players to watch out for are David Payne, a former England U19 left-arm pace bowler, and Liam Norwell.
Medium pacer Norwell played youth cricket for Cornwall and was turning out regularly for Redruth until 2010.
Devon have been forced to make two changes to their 13-man owing to players pulling out.
Keeper Matt Thomposon has been selected to play for the Unicorns A side in the Second Eleven Trophy game against Durham A in Sheffield today. He is replaced by Peter Randerson.
Early order batsman Rob Woodman has unexpected work commitments and has been replaced by Matt Golding.
