Golding has bright future in game
DEVON’S director of cricket Roger Newman is backing Bradninch’s Matt Golding to make a big impression in the team sooner rather than later.

All-rounder Golding has been restored to the Devon 12 for the Minor Counties Championship game against Herefordshire starting at Sidmouth on Sunday (11am).

Devon went to Cornwall two weeks ago with out Golding, who had exam commitments which could not be rescheduled.

Newman sees Golding as one to watch for the future and has had no hesitation brining him back.

“Every side needs someone taking the ball past the outside edge of the bat and that’s what Matt can do with his leg-spin,” said Newman.

“He is 18 and what he needs right now is plenty of bowling, which he isn’t always getting in the league now that has gone to 10 overs a bowler.

“On the right wickets, Matt is going to get a lot of batsmen out.

“He is scoring runs for Bradninch – a decent 50 against Sandford last Saturday – and I am glad to have him back in the 12.”

Devon had pencilled in Budleigh Salterton quick bowler Charlie Morris, but he has been forced to drop out, again due to exam obligations.

Newman said Morris has caught the eye of Worcestershire through his performances for Oxford MCCU this season and may only be available for Devon in fits and starts for what is left of the summer.

“Charlie has played in Worcestershire’s 2nd XI and has been up there quite a bit working with their coaches,” said Newman.

“If Worcestershire want him to play we won’t see much of him, although I expect they will encourage him to play for us if they have nothing on.”

Devon will be hoping to get a full game in for a change against Herefordshire.

Devon, the defending Minor Counties Champions, managed to beat Wales by five wickets at Exmouth last month in their opening game, which was reduced to one innings per side after the entire first and second days were rained off.

They were not so lucky at St Austell last Sunday, Monday and Tuesday against Cornwall where there was no play on day one due to rain, or day three due to fog, rain and bad light.
