Bovey through to T20 final with nine balls to spare

BOVEY Tracey beat Heathcoat by four wickets to book the second place in today’s Ivor Dewdney’s Cup Devon T20 final at Exmouth.

Chasing 150 to win, Bovey got there with nine balls to spare to set up a showdown with Plymouth in the final.

Ben Ayres set the tone for Bovey with a rapid 44 off 21 balls before he was second out at 56 – caught having a bash at new bowler Tom Drake.

Delon Mullins played the next significant innings of 32 off 31 balls with six fours and two sixes to get Bovey within 25 runs of victory.

Along the way Mullins and Peter Bradley (22) broke the back of the chase with a stand of 40 for the fourth wicket.

Chris Bradley belted a bright and breezy 20 not out to conclude the chase.

Highllights in the field included Paul Elliot’s falling catch at short third-man to remove Peter Bradley and Penberthy’s diving effort to dispatch Mullins at deep mid-wicket.

Joe Smith top scored with 82 as Heathcoat posted a competitive 149 for seven

Smith opened up with Harry McDowell and batted through to the 18th over before he holed out to deep square leg.

Along the way Smith hit 11 fours and a six from just 58 balls faced. He shared stands of 68 with McDowell and 28 with brother Sam.

Skipper Chris Small – brilliantly caught by a tumbling Aren de Young at mid-wicket – with 11 was the only other player to reach double figures.

Bovey skipper Peter Bradley rang the bowling changes regularly to keep Heathcoat guessing. Pick of the bowlers with three for 31 was Neil Hancock.

Heathcoat 149-7 (J Smith 82; N Hancock 3-31), Bovey Tracey 153-6 (B P Ayres 44, D Mullins 32, P Bradley 20; J Menheneott 2-28).
