Devon Women savaged by Vilani
Devon Women were well beaten by Staffordshire at the Fortfield, Sidmouth, on Sunday May 27th as they slipped to a six wicket loss.

After winning the toss and electing to bat they looked to be in a promising situation as they reached 132-2 with 20 overs remaining. A solid opening stand of 49 between Amara Carr  (27) and Aylish Cranstone was broken when Carr was smartly stumped off the bowling of England off spinner Danielle Wyatt. Cranstone had settled into the anchor role which she plays so well and despite the loss of Rebecca Bertrand (15) shared a half century stand with Rosalie Birch (21).

The stumping of Birch off the bowling of skipper Elsa Marie-Evans proved a turning point however as the hosts slipped to 138-6, four wickets going down for just six runs as the innings stalled with run outs of both Jodie Dibble and Aylish Cranstone (40) soon followed by a smart catch from Wyatt at backward square leg to dismiss Alli Kelly. Cait O’Keefe joined Lottie Miles and together they set about repairing the damage with an unbeaten stand of 49, O’Keefe was particularly impressive with an unbeaten 28 from 34 balls. The innings closed on 187-6, certainly 50 short of where Devon would have expected to be at the half way stage. Full credit to Staffordshire who stuck to their task well in the field and were rewarded as the tight bowling of off spinners Wyatt and Marie-Evans took its toll as the pressure to post a challenging total mounted.

There followed a brutal knock from Australia A and Victoria Spirit opening bat Elyse Vilani who smashed the Devon attack for an unbeaten 129 from just 72 balls which included 26 boundaries and 1 six. The onslaught knocked all of the Devon bowlers out of their lines and lengths and only left arm spinner Hazelle Garton 3-46 from 8 overs came out of the innings with any credit, which included a smart catch behind from Carr to dismiss Wyatt for 24.

The fielding in particular was very ragged but Devon can at least have the satisfaction that Villani may also impart the same damage to other sides in the Division. Devon must now re-group as they travel to Warrington next weekend to face Cheshire and put in a performance similar to the one that saw them beat Netherlands so convincingly in their opening fixture. There are injury concerns over Lydia Harris, who couldn’t take to the field yesterday after breaking down with a hip injury during the warm up, together with slight worrries over Alli Kelly and Cait O’Keefe, although both of these are expected to be fit for the trip to Cheshire.
