SIDMOUTH sealed their place in Sunday’s Ivor Dewdney Devon T20 finals day at Exmouth with a crushing 134-run win over Tavistock last night.Sidmouth didn’t mess about when they batted, reaching 238 for two in their 20 overs.
Nick Gingell bludgeoned 69 off just 26 balls - that’s not a misprint - and Matt Cooke made 34 off 22 as Sidmouth raced to 97 for one.
Gingell got out first and Cooke followed him on 119. Both wickets were taken by Jonty Newton (2-41), who was the only Tavvy bowler to meet with any success.
Liam Lewis – 55 not out off 36 balls – and Anthony Griffiths with 57 off 33 – put on 119 unbroken for Sidmouth’s third wicket.
Shaun Cleave – none for 54 off four – and James McGahey (2-0-32-0) both suffered under the Sidmouth onslaught.
Tavistock – 24 places and two divisions below Sidmouth in the Devon League – were 104 for nine when their overs ran out.
Skipper Shaun Daymond top scored with 31 for the well-beaten Moorlanders.
Miles Dalton spun his way to three for 10 in four overs, Henry Gater took two for six and there were three run-outs.
Also through are Heathcoat, who were 106-run winners at Bradninch in the Mid-Devon play-off.
Heathcoat hoofed along to 195 for six, led there by the Smith brothers who both scored 60.
After Sam and Joe had gone there were further runs from Chris Small (28) and Ned Menheneott (22).
Chris Acton (1-19) and Will Squire (1-24) fared respectably with the ball. Tim Piper (4-0-60-1) and James Street (4-0-51-1) weren’t quite so fortunate.
Bradninch were 42 for three at half way and 81 for nine when their overs ran out – Piper and Gary Newall both scoring 19.
Jack Menheneott had three for 13 and up-and-coming James Drew took three for 17.
The running order for finals day at Exmouth is Plymouth against Sidmouth at 10.30am in the first semi-final and Bovey Tracey against Heathcoat (1.15pm) in the second.
The final is scheduled for 4.30pm.
Competition organisers are hoping for a bumper turn out from spectators as there are no counter attractions such as Devon games this weekend. The planned game between Budleigh Otters and Devon Lions has been called off.
Admission is free, although there will be a £3.50 car parking charge, which will be waived if drivers can show a membership card from any of the teams taking part.
Host club Exmouth will be offering an array of drinks and refreshments for spectators.
