Disability Schools Big Day Out
On a glorious day last Friday saw a collection of eight disability schools from around the county gathering at Bovey Tracey Cricket Club to take part in a cricket extravaganza. The day consisted of a Kwik Cricket round robin festival for six of the schools and a skills based plus mini games for the other two. The day was punctuated by the continual sound of laughter and smiling faces playing the game, which was fantastic to see and hear. 
The tournament itself was very competitive with the following schools all competing for the Charles Hackett Trophy, which has now become an annual event in the schools calenders. 
Ratcliffe School (Teignmouth), Barley Lane School (Exeter), 2x Combe Pafford (Torbay), Southbrook (Exeter), & West Exe SEN (Exeter) were competing for the trophy in some very competitive games of kwik cricket. With the overall standard of competition high, games across the board were high scoring. Coming out on top after the final round of games were joint winners Barley Lane School and Ratcliffe School who shared the trophy with a view over the coming weeks to play a playoff game among themselves to decide who will keep the trophy in 2014.

Oaklands Park (Teignmouth) and Bidwell Brook (Totnes), also had some competitive games of dartmoor three ball, bats games, and numerous other relays. There was no winner or loser in any of these games just purely to have some fun and introduce the game to children and young adults with disabilities.
A number of special thank you's need to go out to Bovey Tracey CC for hosting the event, also the 15 young leaders from Newton Abbot College who umpired, scored and made sure the games ran without a problem.
Lastly it was great to see the newly merged David Shepherd Cricket Trust in attendance who had very kindly sponsored the event, providing all schools with a cricket bag each and certificates for all who took part. Plus also medals for the winners and runners up of the main competition. From everyone who was involved in the day we owe the trust a huge thank you for there continued support of the event, which the Shepherd Foundation Charity had supported last year. A final thank goes to Chance to Shine who without there support with finances for coaches and equipment the day wouldn't have been possible!
