Match Report: North Devon vs. West Devon Under 10

West Buckland School, 21st April 2013

After two lovely days, rain again threatened, but fortunately our opponents trip north was not in vain this time, with just some light drizzle in the air.  We started the match early to get the best of the weather and North skipper James Tyson put the West in, hoping conditions would improve when the North batted.  There was much excitement and expectation after the weeks of hard work indoors with many playing a game of this length for the first time.  Not surprisingly, there were also some nerves too and the opening bowlers struggled to find rhythm and direction and some early fielding errors.  The West opening partnership was very steady, putting away the loose deliveries without a sign of a chance.  Sadly Tom Limb was forced to retire unwell, but the impressive Joe Du-Gay was joined by Isaac Staig and the pair started to build a strong total.  The North badly needed to regroup at the 12 over time out.

After some advice from the coaching team, skipper Tyson rallied the team well and the bowling and fielding improved greatly over the next few overs (including our first short break for rain).  The opening stand was finally broken at 123 when Jack Prickett bowled Staig for 30, a very positive innings which included 5 boundaries.   Jack Hodgson led the way in the field with some excellent and brave stops and throwing, inspiring his team-mates.  North were rewarded with another quick wicket, courtesy of James Tyson and keeper Chris Cullen combining to have Jamie Cooper caught for a duck.  Some pretty persistent rain then arrived so we took our nice tea, early.

Du-Gay and Will Scott-Munden steadied the West, putting on 45 before Du-Gay retired for a classy 42.  But the North was now back in the game, fighting very hard to restrict West to a chase able total and a much improved team from the early overs.  Jack Ford bowled Scott-Munden for 21, then Nathan Ware bowled Bowden for 10.  But sadly after 33 overs, persistent rain set in and we were reluctantly forced to abandon the game with the North poised to bat.

What did we learn?  The West certainly has a strong early batting line up which will be a challenge for any side.  Meanwhile, after an anxious start, the North bowlers came back strongly with Nathan Ware and Jack Prickett looking the most dangerous.  The fielding was much improved and both sides will have been pleased to have got some cricket and to have learned what it takes to play at this level.  Lastly Paul and I would like to thank the umpires, Charles for scoring and all the many parent helpers who provided drinks and a splendid tea!

Match Report East Devon vs. North Devon
Ottery St Mary Cricket Club, April 28st 2013

East won the toss and elected to bat on a cold overcast day at Ottery St Mary. Openers Farley and Doulton made a strong start contributing equally seeing off the North’s openers until Doulton was caught off the bowling of Tyson for 19. Another wicket fell quickly to Tyson bringing Hurst to the crease. Farley and Hurst batted for the rest of the innings putting on a commendable 154 run partnership with Farley on 67 no and Hurst 46 no at the end of the 35 overs. Both boys demonstrated fantastic concentration and application.

With a daunting total to face, the North put up a great fight. J Tyson batted for the full 35 overs for an excellent and well deserved 53 not out. He was assisted by partnerships with Ford (9), Winley (16) and Ware (8). The highlight of the East’s bowling was Jefferson who from his 7 overs took 5 wickets for 15 runs, including 2 maidens and a hat trick!

It was an exciting game with the North denying the East an outright win and both sides batting for their full 35 overs.

Match Report West Devon vs. South Devon
Plymouth College, April 28st 2013

In summary the wind was bitterly cold and the boys did well in trying to maintain concentration given the cold.

The West batted well against some very good South line and length bowling early on. Noteworthy performances from Will Scott Munden for a well constructed 30.  Alfie Tucker bowled very well and picked up 2 wickets in his 6 overs.  Wickets fell at regular intervals before a rear guard partnership ensure the WEST batted out their overs.

A difficult start for South found themselves 4 wickets down after 7 overs.  This was down to a great opening spell from Isaac Staaig finishing on 4-0-9-2. Charlie Ward and Alfie Tucker were the only 2 batsman who stuck around and made it difficult for the WEST to bowl them out and held out well for the draw.
