North Devon's new signing looking for career in game

NORTH Devon’s new overseas player Quintin Dreyer is hoping his spell at Instow will help him carve out a career in the First Class game.

Dreyer, who is 20 years old, lives in Cape Town and is on the Western Province radar.

Devon have strong links with Western Province through the annual Development squad tour to South Africa which has been running for 12 years.

Those links have fostered an informal exchange programme, which has seen future internationals such as Vernon Philander and Jean-Paul Duminy spend a summer in Devon working on their game.

Dreyer, an opening bowler and middle-order batsman, comes from the same background as Jason Smith, who made 644 runs for North Devon during a 12-game stay in 2013.

The pair were both educated at Wynbreg Boys’ High School and are both talented hockey players as well.

Dreyer was good enough to play hockey for South Africa at U16 and U18 level – and was offered the chance to play professionally in Holland, but turned it down.

Dreyer’s sights are set on becoming a pro cricketer and he has put his education on hold to achieve that aim.

“I am giving myself four or five years to make it as a cricketer – and if I don’t then I will go back to university,” said Dreyer.

“Last year I was with a Division Two club in Kent, which was below the standard I want to play at.

“This year I wanted to play for a top club, which is why I am at North Devon."
