E Division - Caddy whacks Kenn

Uplyme and Lyme Regis skipper Ashley Caddy served up another fine all-round effort for his side to lead them to an 18-point victory at Kenn.

Caddy top scored with 48 and Robert Thom chipped in with 36 as they closed on 151-8.

Sri Lankan Ramesh Batagadaje claimed 3-43 for the Exeter side who were then bundled out for 126 with only Andy Gosling (50) making much impression.

Caddy picked up 3-34 to sit nicely with his earlier runs, but the undoubted star of the bowling effort was Rodney Holmes who claimed three wickets for just five runs!

The mathematics are now straight forward.

If Caddy and his men bank 34 points from their final three outings then they will play in the D Division next season.

The run-in begins with Saturday’s home game with Whitchurch – the first meeting this term was weather beaten.

They then travel to basement side Tiverton and Bickleigh and round things off with a September 1 game at home to mid-table Bridestowe.

Shaldon remain firmly in the box seat to head up and out of the E Division along with Uplyme and Lyme Regis after they bagged a sixth success of the season, defeating host Whitchurch by three wickets.

The home side made Shaldon work hard for their triumph.

Then in-form Charlie Barriball hit 45, that the top offering in the home total of 182.

Shamus McKenna (4-36) and Carl Woolnough (3-53) were the principle wicket takers for Shaldon who were then in a spot of bother in the run chase with seven wickets down and some way to go.

However, skipper Craig Greenwood joined Mark Couch at the crease and the pair eased their side over the winning line at 183-7.

Shaldon are 19 points clear of third placed Kentisbeare and so need 42 points from their final three games to move up the Divisions.

They begin their run-in with Saturday’s home game against second bottom Upottery. They then travel to Kentisbeare where a victory will seal their promotion place.

They finish the season on September 1 at home to Topsham St James.

Kentisbeare’s promotion hopes took a knock as they were denied by the Bridestowe tail-end and had to settle for 15 points from a winning draw.

Andrew Chave hit a superb unbeaten 106 with Libby McCartney chipping in with 32 as the Kent’s closed on 253-6.

Alex Joplin took 2-467 for Bridestowe who were then hanging on with their last pair at the wicket on 183-9 at stumps.

Mark Fogarty top scored for the hosts with 82 whilst Harry Howe claimed 4-37 for the Mid Devon side who now need Shaldon or Uplyme to have unlikely slip-up’s and they themselves must win all three of their remaining games with Kilmington, Shaldon and Upottery, to have any hope of making the step up to the D Division next season.

Kilmington were held at home by relegation threatened Tiverton and Bickleigh.

Dave Cooke (61) and John lavender (46) led the villagers to 245-5.

Matthew Rockett then claimed 2-36 as the Mid Devon men replied with 188-5, Russell Hilton scoring an impressive unbeaten 105.

Kilmington skipper Ash Cook said: “It’s mid-table mediocrity for us this season and that is probably where our play this soggy summer warrants.

“We’ll have to settle for that and look to improve next season.”

Kilmington travel to a Kentisbeare side on Saturday that simply has to win to maintain their promotion hopes.

After that Cook’s side hoist Kenn and then round things off with a September 1 visit to Whitchurch.

Upottery slipped into the bottom two of the E Division and are now in grave danger of sliding into the basement Division of the Francis Clark Devon league.

They became only the third side to be beaten by Topsham James this term when they went down by 58 runs to the visitors.

Ross Treleaven (65) and Tom Richardson (36) led the Exeter side to 202.

Gary Kennard bowled superbly for the villagers taking 5-50.

Leo Jefferson then led the run chase with a classy 77.

However, Nick Horne (6-19) and Ross Treleaven (3-26) combined to ensure that regular wickets fell, the final one on 144.

Upottery are not yet dead and buried for, although into the bottom two for the first time this term, they are still within 13 points of Kenn in sixth place! They begin their three match run-in with Saturday’s trip to promotion chasing Shaldon and then go to mid-table Bridestowe.

On the final day of the season, Saturday, September 1, Upottery host Kentisbeare.
