DEVON’S leading lady and schoolgirl cricketers have benefited from coaching from the very top.

England ladies’ cricket captain Charlotte Edwards worked with all age-groups from U11 through to U17 and the senior team on a visit to the Sir Christopher Ondaajte Devon Cricket Centre in Exeter.

The two-day visit was part of Edwards’ role as a Chance to Shine coaching ambassador, working with Devon Cricket Board. Assisting her during the sessions was England team-mate Caroline Atkins.

Prior to the visit, Devon Cricket Board ran a competition to win a one-to-one coaching session with Edwards, won by Axminster’s Lily Helston, who enjoyed an hour’s batting.

Edwards stayed on after the coaching sessions to give a masterclass in captaincy to the county’s leaders and role models.

Said Edwards: “It’s great to see Devon being so proactive and appreciating the importance of captaincy. We had a very good session.

“Devon’s junior age groups have had a successful few years so it’s great to come down here and see the talent that they have already and help shape their future.”

The visit was organised DCB development officer Andy Fairbairn, who said everyone taking part had learned a lot.

“I can’t speak highly enough of Charlotte or Caroline, they are both wonderful role models for women and girls all over the country,” said Fairbairn.

“Charlotte sets the highest standards on and off the field and her captaincy workshop was truly inspirational. Those in attendance, I’m sure, will never forget the evening.”

Devon Cricket Board’s women’s and girls’ set up has three junior age groups (U13, U15 and U17) and a senior team.

The U15 side won the national cup in 2011 and the U13 and U17 sides went close to national honours too.

In 2012 the senior side will compete in division two of the women’s county championship. The side has been given a further boost with the arrival of former international Rosalie Birch, a winter signing from Sussex.
