THE champion cricketers from South Dartmoor College have been given some top-class coaching by England captain Charlotte Edwards ahead of their trip to the Lady Taverners’ indoor cricket finals in Bristol.

The girls’ under-13 team took on and beat all comers at the Devon final hosted at the Cricket Centre in Exeter.

Having topped their qualifying group the Ashburton girls went on to beat Plymouth College in the final by eight runs to claim their seventh win in a day.

Coming next are the regional finals at the University of the West of England in Bristol, where the best teams from Cornwall, Somerset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire will be lying in wait.

The South Dartmoor Girls are coached by PE teacher Becky Mason, with regular help from Devon Cricket Board coach Scott Chappell.

As part of his roving role in the South Devon area, Chappell works with schools such as South Dartmoor in the Dartmoor School Sport Partnership group.

Through Chappell’s connections it was possible to get Edwards down for a session on Tuesday this week. Edwards is pictured (right) giving Ellie Ingham-Hill some batting tips.

“It was really a reward for them for reaching the regional final,” said Chappell.

“The girls played really well to win the Devon round of the Lady Taverners’ competition – but from now on it will get tougher.

“Becky Mason works really hard with the girls and having Charlotte down helps enhance the work she has done with them for the challenge ahead.”
