SANDFORD entertain Bovey Tracey this Saturday looking for the win to help them get out of the bottom two.
Jamie Palmer’s men went to the County Ground last Saturday, where they suffered a seven-wicket defeat at the hands of Exeter.
Pete Steer top scored for Sandford with 42 and Richard Tucker had 41 in a Sandford total of 232 for nine.
After an early scare when Will Steward was dismissed in the third over for a duck, Exeter took their time and cruised to victory with nine balls to spare.
Sandford are five points behind Heathcoat in what’s becoming the scrabble to stay up with Torquay and Cornwood.
The big game is on Saturday week when Heathcoat and Sandford clash at Knightshayes in the round of fixtures marking the halfway stage of the season.
Sandford won’t want to be in the bottom two after that game so a win over Bovey will help their prospects no end.
Skipper Palmer felt the outcome at Exeter didn’t do his side total justice.
“It was disappointing to lose as I think we played as a team better than the scoreline suggests,” said Palmer.
“We were much improved in the field and we made Exeter work hard for their win.
“Pete Steer’s overall performance was fantastic, both with bat and ball, and Russell Discombe was very economical again.”
After Ryan Glass went to George Greenway in the second over, Tucker set about putting a total on the board.
Along the way there was support from Laurence May (29) and Steve Morish (26).
Steer and debutant Gary Abdoll (18) put on 64 for the eighth wicket before Greenway (3-24) picked them off one after the other.
Exeter’s run-chase was constructed round a knock of 80 from Ben Green, the Somerset and England U17 rising star.
Green and Miles Lenygon made an 85-run dent in the deficit, then Neal Prouse joined Green to wipe off another 93.
Prouse (54) and Sean Morris (31) were the not-out batsmen when the target was passed.
Exeter may be up to fifth in the table, but skipper Lenygon believes they can do better.
“We were very sloppy in the field and with the ball, ut we brought it back well and managed to keep taking wickets,” said Lenygon.
“We batted sensibly and in the end it was a comfortable victory.”
