EXETER should have the firepower to mount a title push this season as they attempt to bring the Premier title back to the County Ground for the first time since 2000.
The City side dropped out of the Premier for two seasons, but returned last year and finished a credible sixth in the final table.
Points-wise Exeter were closer to the bottom than the top, but never in any sort of danger of being sucked into a relegation battle.
The task facing new skipper Miles Lenygon, who has taken over from long-serving Jon Tipper, is how to keep an expanded squad happy.
“I have already told players there will have to be rotation this season and I want them performing in the 2nd XI ready to go back in the ones,” said Lenygon.
“I am excited about the season ahead as we have a strong side from the start and as the season goes on players will come in to replace those leaving.”
Pacer Joe Barrs is in from Bovey Tracey and committed for the season.
Exeter will start the campaign with Andy Curtis opening up and all-rounder Matt Hicks in the middle order.
Both will be gone by mid-season, to Worcester and the United States respectively.
As the season progresses Exeter should see more of Devon opener Rob Holman, new signing Dom Bess from Sidmouth, Ollie Sale and Billy Searle and Ben Green, when his Somerset and England U17 commitments permit.
The Steward brothers – keeper Will and seamer Merrick – are expected to play regularly and contribute too.
“Will showed at the end of last season what a good batsman he his and I expect him to play a big role,” said Lenygon.
With Searle, Green, Bess, Sale, Barrs and Adam Gribble as well as Steward, Exeter appear to have a bowling line-up to envy.
“The important thing will be to take early wickets,” said Lenygon.
Lenygon was with Exmouth until moving early in the 2011 season and rates his old club as the one to beat.
“They have class in the batting down to seven and eight – two or three of whom will come off and 800 runs a season,” said Lenygon.
“And they have Richard Baggs as their captain, someone who really knows what he is doing.
“Exmouth blasted us twice last year. We don’t intend letting that happen again.”
It’s North Devon away for Exeter on the opening day of their season.
