EXETER skipper Jon Tipper believes his side are well equipped to return to the top flight this term after two years in the A Division.
The City side slipped out of the Premier Division in 2010 with only three wins to their name and just missed out on going straight back up in 2011.
It was a different story last season as batters Miles Leyngon (309) and Chris Webb (276), backed up by wicket takers Callum Still (45), Adam Gribble (32) and Andy Meade (21) got Exeter through the season unbeaten.
Tipper knows it is a big jump back to the Premier Division – last season’s experiences showed that – but he is confident Exeter will survive it.
“Torquay romped the A Division in 2011 but only just stayed up last year – and Sandford went straight back down,” said Tipper.
“Making the step back up is something we have all talked about and we know it will be tough.
“Having two years in the A Division probably wasn’t a bad thing as two things have come from it.
“Our younger players – the Cameron Graingers and Will Stewards – have improved all round and everyone has developed some confidence in their ability because we have been winning matches regularly.
“We have made some signings which have strengthened the team and will be aiming to finish in the top half of the table. If we do, I will be delighted.”
New to the County Ground this summer are batter Matt Hicks (ex-Northants Academy), spinner Harry Booker (Braunton), keeper Robin Fern (Trent University), pacer Ollie Sale (Tavistock) and Aussie prospect Blake Reed.
Reed, who bats, has travelled the well-worn path from the South Perth club in Western Australia on the recommendation of ex-County Ground favourite Marshall Hood.
Callum Still, a mainstay of the bowling attack for the past two years, has returned home to Australia and left-armer Jack Richardson hasn’t retuned yet from a winter Down Under.
As the season unfolds Exeter expect to get stronger as their own players return from university.
There had been fears that veteran left-hander Glen Lammonby would announce his retirement this season, but he intends soldiering on for a bit longer.
Lammonby first appeared in 1991 for Exeter, when he hit 428 runs in the 1st XI.
