Bovey take max bowling points before downpour

BOVEY Tracey made the best of a bad job against Paignton by collecting maximum bowling bonus points before the game was called off.

Paignton were bowled out either side of the showers for 84 – no one making more than Tyler Sylvester and Mark Smith, who had 19 each.

Peter Bradley (2-32) and Ryan Bougourd did the early damage, then Mark Lake (4-23) shot away the middle order.

Lake, the former Zimbabwe U19 captain, is studying in this country and will be available for Bovey when his university commitments in Oxford allow.

Sylvester resisted longest – he was ninth out and the last of Lake’s victims.

At the other end Sam Hickenbottom hastened the end for Paignton by taking three for nine in 16 balls as the tail capitulated.

Rain during the break between innings carried on after tea and no further play as possible.

Paignton are at home to Plymouth this Saturday, when skipper George Benton is expecting a better performance.

Benton said delays getting the game under way at Bovey did not help, but Paignton did themselves no favours either.

“Waiting around most of the afternoon for our first game isn't how we would like to have started, but that's no excuse for a poor batting performance,” said Benton.

“But credit to Bovey as they bowled very well.

“We are all ready for this weekend against Plymouth.

“A good week of hard training is in place for the lads, so we will be prepared for Saturday.”

Exmouth travelled to Exeter to watch the rain come down before common sense prevailed and the game was called off.

Sidmouth’s away game at new boys Plympton was also a casualty of the weather.
