WICKETKEEPER-batsman Adrian Hewings will lead South Devon CC next season as they return to the A Division of the Devon League after an absence of 12 months.

Hewings, one of the Newton Abbot club’s youth system graduates, has spent almost all his career at Marsh Road, apart from a brief spell with Ashburton.

Playing for South Devon runs in the family as dad Alan was one of the club’s leading bowlers throughout the 1980s.Grandad Dave turned out for the club in the 1950s.

Hewings replaces Dave Knowles, who stood down at the end of last season after three years in the job having safely delivered promotion as B Division runners-up.

Devon O50s’ batsman Neil Matthews will carry on for another year as 2nd XI skipper, although 2012 will almost certainly be his last in the job.

Long-serving Ian Shepherd will captain the Sunday League XI in the South Devon League.

All the appointments were confirmed at South Devon’s annual meeting, which followed hard on the heels of the club’s awards night dinner.

For the second year running Hewings won the club’s all-rounder trophy for his regular run-scoring and his glovework behind the stumps.

Left-arm spinner Matt Coult was a winner twice over as he took the Bill Dalton Trophy for the best bowling performance of the season – eight for 26 against Barnstaple & Pilton – and the new Gary Bowles Cup for most wickets taken.

Bowles, who died in December last year, took almost 300 wickets during a 13-year 1st XI career with the club. Coult took 30 wickets at 16.60 last summer. His eight for 26 against B&P was the best return in the B Division by any bowler last season, not just South Devon.

The Committee Trophy for the most exciting innings of the season was claimed by Henry Burningham (left) for a quickfire 110 – his first ton for the club – in the nine-wicket win over Clyst St George.

Jonty Parsons took the 2nd XI bowling cup – the Mickey Jones Trophy – and Matt Blackmore was ther 2nd XI batsman of the year.

James Hart won the Simon Chambers Cup for the young player of the year. Colts’ team-mate Cameron Scott was the most-improved player of the year.

The Tony Richardson Cup for overall player of the year went to Tom Carter.

South Devon will start pre-season indoor nets shortly after Christmas and would be interested in talking to any potential new players of all abilities. Contact Hewings (07921 816957) or Matthews (07801 756404) for an informal chat.
