PLAYER-coach Mark Gilmour has left Brixham for pastures new at Torquay and is set to make his 1st XI debut against Budleigh Salterton this Saturday.
Gilmour, who started out with Paignton, moved to Brixham at the start of last season as player coach.
The talented all-rounder – he played through the age groups for Devon and has featured in the past for the Devon Lions – took 44 wickets last season in the A Division. Only Exeter’s Callum Still took more.
Brixham chairman Barry Orchard met with Gilmour last week to discuss the club’s plans for the future. The meeting ended with a mutual parting of the ways.
“I would like to thank Mark for everything he has done at Brixham and wish him all the best at Torquay,” said Orchard.
“No one will be more pleased than me if he takes stacks of wickets for Torquay and the Lions start looking at him again.”
Torquay skipper Justin Yau said Gimour was a ‘fantastic signing’ who would bolster the squad.
“Mark approached us and was very pro-active in getting the forms signed and was enthusiastic when we sat down to discuss the club's ethos and vision,” said Yau.
“He has got the hunger back in his game and wants to test himself in the best division possible as he approaches his prime cricketing years.
“I have no doubt he will have an integral part to play this season and for future years.
“He strengthens all departments, is welcomed with open arms and we look forward to his contributions.
“I remember playing with him for Devon a few years back and have always found him a dangerous player who will suit the new format perfectly.
“The club are delighted with another quality addition which once again shows the direction we are heading.”
Gilmour assisted Torquay’s 2nd XI last Saturday when they visited Chagford and showed his credential by taking five for 24 as the Moorlanders were bowled out for 86.
Rob Jack (33no) and Tim Western (43no) knocked off the runs without mishap as Torquay closed the gap on D Division West leaders Ivybridge to 10 points.
