Gloucestershire game could be rearranged

CORNWOOD have been left counting the cost of yesterday’s washed-out game between Devon and Gloucestershire at Oak Park.

The T20 game was supposed to be a joint benefit for Devon’s David Shepherd Foundation and Gloucestershire’s Alex Gidman.

It only needed a cursory inspection at nine in the morning for Cornwood officials to call the game off.

Phil Bees, one of the match managers, said it was heart-breaking for all the club members who had worked so hard to get the game on to see it called off.

But Bees said he hoped it would prove to be a postponement rather than a cancellation.

“In terms of what it has cost us we are looking at somewhere between £500-£1000, although you cannot put a price on the hundreds of hours put in by members to make the arrangements,” said Bees.

“On top of what it cost us to set things up, there is the income we won’t derive from the corporate hospitality and catering sales on the day.

“This was never a money making exercise for the club, but a fund-raiser for Gidman and the Shepherd Foundation. We had hoped to make sizeable donations to both.

“If possible we would like to replay the game at a later date in the season. Devon have already made that offer to Gloucestershire and we are hoping to hear back from them soon.

“It has been a disappointment after all the hard work that went in, but when you play cricket in the English climate things can go wrong from time to time.

“It won’t put us off trying to stage similar games like this in future.”
