Kidd and Dart show up well for Devon in defeat

DEVON went down by 85 runs against Gloucestershire at Cornwood last night in a T20 double benefit.

Gloucestershire’s long-serving former England A batter Alex Gidman brought a side down to Oak Park to raise money for his benefit fund.

Proceeds from the game were shared with the David Shepherd Cricket Foundation, Devon CCC’s youth development programme.

The Gladiators showed Devon how T20 cricket should be played by rattling up 215 for five in 20 overs.

Jack Taylor flayed 48 off 18 balls with 40 in boundaries and Dan Housego cracked 68 of 40 balls.

There was 30 off 24 for Ian Cockbain and 23 from eight balls for Kiwi one-day star Rob Nicol.

Pick of Devon’s bowlers by a distance was Matt Kidd with two for 25 off four overs – one of them T20 gold that is a maiden!

Devon don’t expect to win games like this – the pros play T20 cricket regularly and practice for it – and the best they can hope for is respectability.

A final total of 130 for nine was a little below par, although nothing to be ashamed of either.

Josh Bess (31) and James Burke (26) got runs at the top of the order as Devon made a solid start.

Then it slowed, although Devon’s management were delighted with Jack Dart’s cameo knock at fifth wicket down.

Dart made 25 off 15 balls – mostly in boundaries – and was confident enough to get the reverse sweep out against the spinners not once but twice.

Gloucester Lions 215-5 (D M Housego 68, I C Cockbain 30, J M R Taylor 48; M J L Kidd 2-25), Devon 130-9 (J J Bess 31, J E Burke 26; C D J Dent 3-30), Gloucester Gladiators bt Devon by 85 runs.
