Folland top scores in memorial game

THERE was a thrilling finish to the annual Graeme Townsend Memorial Game at Heathcoat, which ended in a tie.

The Graeme Townsend XI made 152 for four in the 30-over match – former Devon captain Nick Folland leading the way with 63.

Matt Parkes chipped in with 28 and England O60s’ batsman Bob Eames made 16.

With Joe Webb making 48 and Bryn Latchem 34, the Tiverton & District XI reached the last over needing seven to win, which became three from the final ball.

Darron Drew managed to scuttle through for two, which meant the game finished in a tie.

Eames was the star man with the ball, picking up three for 10, while former Heathcoat and Somerset all-rounder Julian Wyatt took two for 26.

The game is played annually in memory of former Heathcoat secretary and 1st XI team manager Graeme Townsend, who died 12 years ago.

Townsend was a keen supporter of youth cricket and money raised from the game goes to promoting the sport in and around Tiverton.

Graeme’s brother Gareth, the academy director for Surrey CCC, came down from London to play in the match along with sons Ben and Jack.
