A FORMER captain of South Devon Cricket Club has died suddenly after suffering an aneurism while driving.
Charlie Hackett, who was in his early 60s, was taken ill behind the wheel of his car while driving near Dawlish.
Hackett (pictured) was initially taken to hospital in Torquay then transferred to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth. Doctors were unable to save him.
Hackett skippered South Devon 2nd XI for much of the 1990s and was appointed first team captain in 1997 when the fortunes of the Newton Abbot club were at a particularly low ebb.
Although South Devon had a dreadful season, Hackett managed to prevent them being relegated from the Devon League A Division and laid the platform for the team to push for promotion the following season.
Hackett continued to play for the club as a miserly spin bowler and hard-to-shift batsman, on and off until 2011.
A heart attack ended Hackett’s playing career, although he had hoped to return to the club this summer in some capacity, possibly umpiring.
Away from the cricket pitch Hackett played Hockey for Dawlish Men and golf.
A retired head-master and latterly inspector for Ofsted, Hackett is survived by his second wife Sarah and daughter Michelle.
No funeral arrangements have been made yet.
