Old league handbooks wanted for competition archive
WANTED! Old Devon League handbooks from the 1970s to help complete the competition archive.

The Devon League started in 1972 but record keeping from the early years is patchy to say the least!

League bosses are trying to track down all the league tables since the competition started - and are one year short of a complete set.

The missing table is for 1974 when the league was won by Torquay for the second time in three years.

'If anyone has a handbook for 1975 it should have the previous season's league table in it," said current league secretary Geoff Coish.

'Unfortunately, almost all the playing records between 1972 and 1983 were not kept by the league, which is a pity as it is nice to look back.

'Going though old newspaper cuttings it has been possible to track down every other table apart from 1994.

'In those days the season started in mid-April and went on until the second or third week of September. There was no set season; clubs organised league games around their long-standing friendlies. By then football was in full swing and newspaper sports editors had lost interest in cricket.'

The league does not have handbooks from 1972-1975 inclusive and would be delighted to complete a full set. Anyone with a book from one of the missing years is asked to contact Coish (01626 834344), archivist David Court (01752 362343) or Conrad Sutcliffe (07767 622530).
