Hanks in Devon 13 for Somerset warm-up
NEIL Hancock comes into the Devon squad to face Somerset 2nd XI in the final warm-up game before the season starts for real.

Former skipper Hancock (pictured) retired at the end of the 2011 season having had two years at the helm.

Hancock stays retired in three-day cricket, but has made himself available for one-day games again.

Devon play Oxfordshire in the one-day MCCA Cup on April 21 and Hancock is in contention to play.

The balancing act for the Devon management is whether to go with Hancock – a proven performer but a bit long in the tooth at 36 – or go with one of the next generation of players?

After warm-up games against Cardiff MCCU and Devon Lions – which both ended in defeats – director of cricket Keith Donohue has a pretty good idea of his squad for the four-game cup pool programme.

Donohue is a new man in charge and he brings with him a fresh approach.

So it is no surprise there are changes of personnel in the 13-man squad, reflecting the Donohue regime.

Peter Bradley, Matt Golding, Rhys Davies, Liam Lewis, Will Murray and Matt Kidd all come in to the party.

The notable absentees from last year’s one-day squad are batters Rob Woodman and Matt Wood, all-rounder Josh Bess, left-arm spinner Gary Chappell and seamer Ryan Bougourd.

Bougourd has been injured and may yet feature as the season unfolds.

Bess is currently in New Zealand on holiday, but is another who will come into contention.
