THE village cricketers of a South Hams club have been ‘bowled over’ by a grant from Sport England which will enable them to replace their ‘ramshackle’ pavilion and build for the future.
Harberton Cricket Club has won £46,155 of Olympic legacy funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities Fund.
The club’s new pavilion will have changing rooms, toilets, equipment storage, kitchen, social area and a built-in score hut.
The club hopes the new project will enable the club to attract more juniors, ladies and disabled cricketers.
Chairman Barry Goldsmith said: “We are delighted.
“Having recently completed the purchase of our ground at Stonehills, we can now move forward and replace our ramshackle hut with a pavilion to match our outstanding outdoor facilities.
“The new pavilion will enable the club to expand community use of the ground for additional sporting and social activities. We are thrilled that our village will as a result of this funding have a lasting legacy of the 2012 Olympics. Many thanks to Sport England for its support and generosity.”
Totnes MP Sarah Wollaston added: “Cricket is at the heart of Devon’s communities.
“It is wonderful to see a share of Sport England’s Olympic and Paralympic legacy funding recognising the importance of village cricket and playing its part in nurturing players to make it to the top of the sport.”
The project is one of 350 local community sports groups who have been offered a total of £17.4 million in Olympic legacy funding through the Inspired Facilities Fund.
Harberton Cricket Club was established in 1987 and has been based at the Stonehills site just outside the village since 2002.
The club runs senior teams at weekends and plays T20 cricket on Wednesday evenings, playing friendly matches against local clubs and touring teams. Their adult teams are not involved in any league cricket, although the U13 youth teams is.
This year the club has entered the National Village Cup, sponsored by Wisden, in the hope of getting all the way to the final at Lord’s.
Sport England chairman Richard Lewis said: “This investment will create a fantastic sporting legacy for Harberton.
“This fund has really hit the mark with sports clubs in Devon. It shows we’re offering the legacy that people want for their local community. For hundreds of clubs and tens of thousands of people, 2012 will be the year their local sports facilities got better.”
