HATHERLEIGH took a step towards safety from the wrong end of the A Division table by handing out a 93-run beating to Abbotskerswell.
Hathereigh made 192 for nine in their 50 overs – Jack Cherrington making a top score of 30 – then shot Abbots out for 99 in reply.
Victory doesn’t change Hatherleigh’s position – they remain second from bottom – but they are only nine points away from safety now.
Cherington went in when Hatherleigh were two for one in the second over and put in 40 with Carl Schwrz (10) and 38 with Simon Gillespie (21) to stave off a possible collapse.
After Cherrington was fifth out at 90 – the second of three scalps for Simon Bowman – there were useful chip-ins from Andy Collier (20), Ryan Davies (20), Rob Cockwell (24) and the indefatigable Nick Rogers (25no).
Bowman (3-24) just pipped Jake Dearago (3-32) for the bowling honours.
Abbots were 83 for two at halfway thanks t early runs from Conor Stanley (23) and skipper Richard Acton (28). Then the wheel fell off.
Stanley was run out by Collier, prompting a massive collapse to 85 or seven then on to 99 all out.
Hatherleigh skipper Mark Lake followed his five wickets against Plympton with four more to end Abbots sliding to defeat.
“It was a win we really needed and hopefully can kick start our season now,” said skipper Lake.
“A few more applied themselves with the bat after being two for one after two overs and we did very well to get 192.
“Once again we bowled very well and built lots of pressure.”
Abbots skipper Acton was close to seething about the manner of his side’s defeat.
“We let ourselves down with the bat,” said Acton
“Our bowlers did well to restrict them to 191. Whitlock and DeAraugo again made early inroads and Steve Bowman picked up three wickets in the middle overs.
“Our batting once again failed to deliver, and it was not a pitch that we should have been bowled out for 99 on.
“Every batsman needs to start taking responsibility and go on to make the big score that will help us chase down scores or set totals.
“Credit to Hatherleigh though, they battled well when they batted and kept it very tight when they bowled.”
