BIDEFORD captain Ian Hayter and several of his title-winning team attended the North Devon League awards evening at Barnstaple Town FC where they were presented with the club’s first trophy in this competition since 2004.

Hayter, who has decided to stand down as captain next year due to family commitments, said: ‘It’s been a bit of a roller-coaster ride over the last three seasons but we’ve come a very long way.

“Week in week out I’ve tried to stress the importance of playing together as a team – everyone has contributed to our title winning season and that's the secret of our success.

“We’ve also won the umpires’ fair play award two years in a row now, which means not only are we playing some very decent cricket, but we’re also playing it in the right way.

“We were involved in some exciting and memorable games and I hope whoever takes over the captaincy will have the same level of commitment from the players that I had.”

Paul Argyle the Bideford secretary paid tribute to Hayter’s captaincy saying: “Ian is not only a good cricketer in his own right but is also a fine leader of men.

“To perhaps overachieve in the way that we did on Sundays - our Saturday cricket is very inconsistent by comparison - speaks volumes for his ability to manage and get the best out of what can on their day be a very decent

 side.

“We seem to play with a bit more freedom and expression on Sundays as we are an established unit with a very good record in Division One.

“While we may not have the best players in every position we have the best team and will do our best to defend it next year as it is a very important competition for us.”
