Heathcoat confident lessons have been learned

HEATHCOAT return to the Premier Division after a year away with a testing trip to defending champions Exmouth.

A year in the A Division, which they won outright to earn promotion straight back, gave Heathcoat the chance to regroup.

Skipper Sam Smith doesn’t expect to win the Premier Division, but he doesn’t plan on being anywhere near the bottom either.

“We aren’t fooling ourselves – our first aim is just to stay up and that is well within our ability, “ said Smith.

“The change to win-lose cricket last year suited us as we are a side that plays positively. We aren’t good at hanging for a draw.

“Last time we were in the Premier Division we only started playing our best cricket around halfway – by when we were already in big trouble. Yet one more win probably would have saved us.

“I am confident we can win a decent number of games and stay away from trouble.”

Heathcoat have re-recruited South African batting all-rounder Qaasim Adams for a third stint at the club. He featured for them in 2005 and 2009.

Adams is now an established member of the Northerns Provincial team and the Titans Super-Sport and T20 sides.

He is averaging more than 40 with the bat in First Class cricket and the early 30s in the 50-over format.

Somerset’s Lewis Gregory has transferred in from Plympton, although how much he will play depends on his professional commitments.

Ben Pitkin, a left-armer who was with Taunton St Andrew last season and has turned out for Lynton & Lynmouth, is another new signing.

So is Pitkin’s St Andrew team-mate Sam Venn, although school commitments will limit the attacking left-hander’s outings in the first half of the season.
