Seamers prosper before heavens open
DEVON are in familiar territory going into the final day of their game against Herefordshire at Sidmouth – praying for the rain to hold off long enough to play some cricket.

Devon’s previous two Minor Counties games were badly rain affected, although they did beat Wales in a one-day thrash at Exmouth.

Day one against Herefordshire was rained off – and day two failed to make it up to tea time before the rain swept in.

Devon were in a strong position at the time – they had reduced Herefordshire to 142 for eight - but gettin a result on the third and final day will be hard.

“I will be looking for early wickets when we get back out there, get us in and get a few runs on the board quickly, then try and put some pressure on Hereford late in the day,” said Devon skipper Chris Bradley.

“That’s what I would like to do, but we are trying to compress three days into a day and a half, which isn’t the easiest thing in the world.”

The conditions were tailor-made for Devon’s seam-orientated bowling attack as the balls was moving all over the place.

There were two wickets each for Peter Bradley and Ryan Bougourd, and one for Trevor Anning and Josh Bess.

Bess produced the ball of the day to remove Tom Austwick, who played down the wrong line completely as the ball left him and snicked the off-stump on the way past.

Fielder of the day was Chris Bradley, who ran-out top scorer Andy Kimberlin (33) with a direct hit from sideways on aimed at a stump and half at best.

There were three catches for keeper Matt Thompson, who was presented with his county cap during the lunch interval.

Devon don’t award caps just for being picked: they have to be earned by performances.

Thompson’s cap was always on the cards after he topped the Devon batting averages last season and was sealed by important knocks against Wales and Cornwall in the first two games of the current campaign.

“He has kept consistently since replacing Sandy Allen as wicketkeeper, and has the amazing ability to always get runs when they are needed most,” said director of cricket Roger Newman at the presentation.
