THE Dumplings experienced a rare loss against the Old Honitonians in their match played at Bradninch.
Both clubs had experienced difficulties in completing their team and the Dumplings fielded only 10 players with one also having to leave early.
The Dumplings batted first and made rapid progress to reach 254 for 5 declared in 50 overs, with Cornwood’s Henry Bennett (50), John Meredith (54) and Chris Kelmere (78) the chief contributors. Only Phil Tuck had much success with the ball, finishing with 2 for 52.
The declaration left the OHs with a generous 58 overs to reach their target and they duly did so with 5 wickets down and 4 overs left.
The Dumplings fielding on the day was ragged and the bowling erratic, with the honourable exception of Stoke Gabriel’s Simon Phillips whose 10 overs cost just 19 runs.
Initially the OHs progressed solidly with Will Murray (38) and Rod Wicks (56) laying the foundation for Phil Tuck’s rapid 65 not out to seal the victory.
For the Dumplings Julian Fawkes claimed 2 for 62 and Bennett 2 for 68.
Devon Dumplings 254 for 5 declared (Kelmere 78, Meredith 54, Bennet 50, Tuck 2-52), Old Honitonians 255 for 5 (Tuck 65 not out, Wicks 56, Murray 38, Fawkes 2-62, Bennet 2-68). OHs won by 5 wickets.
