Devon’s high-performance squad, with coach Tim Western (front, centre)
DEVON’S best emerging cricketers are gearing up for the season ahead through a challenging winter itinerary as part of a cricket high performance programme for The Devon Lions.
Tim Western, who was appointed high-performance manager of Lions in December, is leading the winter coaching supported by the county club CEO Neil Gamble and the director of cricket Roger Newman.
“My main aim is to provide strength in depth for the county at senior level in terms of quality and sustainability, increasing the number of young players who are capable of playing minor county cricket,” said Western.
With that in mind, specialist coaches in the key areas of performance have been brought in on a voluntary basis to support the squad.
They have included bowling coach Peter Lever, the former England and Lancashire fast bowler; Nick Rowe, a strength and conditioning coach who has worked previously with Somerset CCC, James Burton, the Devon CCC physiotherapist and Joel Murphy, who is this year captaining Budleigh in the Devon Premier Division.
Nineteen lads are on the programme, which was selected following assessment sessions.
Said Western: “The squad includes some of the best, young league players between 17 and 21.
“We have put together a structured programme to improve the squad’s technical, physical, mental, tactical and lifestyle management skills.”
Newman, a former academy director at Warwickshire CCC has clearly been impressed with what he has seen so far.
“These sessions are equal to any I have experienced in the First Class game and give these emerging players a real opportunity of progressing further in the game,” said Newman.
The Devon Lions, supported by the David Shepherd Foundation, have a series of fixtures this summer with the first against the full county side on April 1 at Axminster.
The squad comprises: Luke Bess (Sidmouth), Zak Bess (Sidmouth), Harry Booker (Braunton), Connor Bryan (Paignton), Max Curtis (North Devon), Jack Dart (Budleigh), Rhys Davies (Tavistock), Adam Goodliffe (Cornwood), Cameron Grainger (Exeter), George Greenway (Exmouth), Barney Huxtable (Exmouth), Matt Kidd (Bovey Tracey), Charlie Morris (Budleigh), Dylan Penberthy (Heathcoat), Matt Plowman (Budleigh), Pete Randerson (Sidmouth), Jack Richardson (Exeter), Elliot Rice (Budleigh) and Samuel Wyatt-Haines (Bovey Tracey).Fitness work for the high-performance squad
