ISLAND CRICKET SDYL - UNDER-11 A DIVISION
IPPLEPEN bounced back from some disappointing performances to finish the season like a train with back-to-back wins over Torquay and Paignton.
The key to both victories was some economical spells from the bowlers, with captain and opening bowler Jack Hingston returning figures of 6-2-14-1.
Hingston was supported by spinner Ben Mustafa (5-1-17-1) and pacer Callum Thomas (6-2-15-3).
Torquay made 74 having been inserted with Sam Carpenter retiring on 30. Andrew Francis (11) and Ethan Axford (10) both contributed useful runs in steady innings.
Ipplepen suffered an early blow as Alex Harris fell to a stunning catch at backward square, but Ben Cowdry (11) and Corey Price (31ret) moved the score along without alarm as Ipplepen reached their 50 in the 11th over for the loss of just one wicket.
Six wickets fell for as many runs as Axford scooped three in two overs.
Thomas and Mustafa saw the ‘Pens to victory with two wickets and three balls to spare.
Ipplepen reserved their best until last – and eight-wicket win at Paignton,
Hingston and Mustafa combined to send Paignton to 21 for four after seven overs.
Good batting by Ben Parker (18) and George Garside added 21 for the fifth wicket, and some hitting by Ruben Stanley (15) late in the innings gave Paignton a decent closing total of 77 for eight.
Callum Bevis picked up two of the Paignton wickets to fall.
Ipplepen made quick work of finishing the game as the Paignton bowlers were blitzed by the attacking play of Callum King (21) and Price (30ret).
Price’s innings consisted of just 21 balls faced with 5 fours, while King faced just 15 balls. Cowdry was run-out by some excellent Paignton fielding - and after one devastating Aaron Wellington over saw four wickets fall, Harrison Gorny and Conor Maggs saw Ipplepen over the finishing line in just 11.1 overs.
Wellington (2-7) was the only home bowler to register any wickets.
Torquay’s defeat to Ipplepen means Kingsbridge are assured of second place, while Ipplepen will finish fourth between Torquay (3rd) and Paignton (5th).
In the individual performance tables, Carpenter’s two wickets against Ipplepen put him level with Bovey’s Chris Yabsley on 10 wickets.
Paignton’s Dan Bullock (122) and Price (108) have moved into third and fourth in the run totals respectively.
