BEN Slaviero was the hero for Thorverton, as Division One of the Island Exeter T20 league got under way taking an all clean-bowled hat-trick to skittle out visitors Clyst Hydon as the Thors won by just two runs!
Mike Johnson’s 4-19 had earlier restricted the home side to a below-par looking 84 all out, with only Will Denford (23), James Hope (21) and Slaviero (10) getting into double figures.
Clyst’s reply got off to a terrible start, both openers sent back before a run had been scored! A recovery was mounted by John Rhodes (19) and Jock Tipper (17), not to mention a generous helping of 30 extras from the hosts. Slaviero (4-7) was to ensure Clyst fell just short on the chase, but he received good support from Gill Crouch (4-15).
For the second week running Topsham St James came out on the winning side of a very close encounter.
Alphington batted first and were all out for 104 on the penultimate ball. Top run scorer was Luke Phillips who made 32 with Brian Jeary taking four for 11 and Ross Treleaven three for 15
St James’ reply went on at a steady pace with Will Pratt scoring 39 and Aaron Clarke 25, putting on 59 for the third wicket.
At the start of the final over Topsham were 102 for 4 and looked set for an easy win with Treleaven and captain Joe Thomlinson at the crease.
However, things changed very rapidly, with both these wickets falling for only oe run off the first four balls. Thirteen year old Jim Shepherd then came to the wicket needing two runs off two balls.
The first ball was a dot, but then Jim got an edge off the second ball, which led to it racing down to the boundary and the victory being achieved.
Pick of the Alphas bowling were Tom Bath (2-18) and Anthony Shepherd (2-11).
