YOUNGSTERS from Barton Cricket Club enjoyed unexpected —and VIP — coaching at one of their winter indoor training sessions.

England and Somerset star Craig Kieswetter (pictured, left with Cole Harford) turned up to lead the training at St Cuthbert Mayne School’s sports hall.

The visit was organised by the family of two of the club’s young recruits who are friends with the 25-year-old wicket keeper/batsman.

Craig put the under-11s through their paces as well as signing autographs.

Adam Parker, one of the Barton coaches, said: “Craig was brilliant and the youngsters couldn’t believe their luck.

He is a smashing bloke and they enjoyed every minute.” Craig promised a return visit in the not too distant future —and it may be when Barton host a benefit game for his Somerset co-star Arul Suppiah.

The club has been asked to stage a T20 game against the Somerset team as part of Suppiah’s benefit year programme at their Cricketfield Road, Torquay, ground on Monday, September 16.

More details will be announced later.

A Barton spokesman said: “It’s a fantastic feather in the cap for the club and should be a great night.

“The game is being played outside the main summer season so we had to get permission from Torbay Council and Upton Athletic Football Club to use the ground that night.

They both said ‘yes’ so we would just like to say a big thank you to them.” The Barton colts are holding their last indoor training session at Cuthbert Mayne on Friday (April 26) night.

Sessions, run by ECB coaches, run between 6pm and 7.30pm (eight to under 11s) and 7.30pm to 9pm (12s to 19s).

The club, which will have teams competing in the 11s, 13s, 15s and 19s of the South Devon Youth League this year, starts Sunday morning summer outdoor training schools in the first week of May —Sunday May 5.

They run every Sunday through to September between 10am and noon.

New players are welcome. For more details ring 07703 129 682.
