Kentisbeare ground a cut above thanks to Viridor grant

Kentisbeare groundsman Nigel Gillett settles into the seat of his new motor roller during a demonstration day at the club's recent junior awards event

KENTISBEARE’S Rectory Park home will be a cut above the rest in the D Division next season now the club has four new pieces of ground-keeping equipment.

The club has benefited from a £28,300 grant from the Viridor Credits Broadpath Landfill at nearby Uffculme.

For years the club has been getting by with unreliable, elderly machinery, but not any more!

Armed with their grant cash the club has been out and bought:

• A Power Roller 12-wicket roller

• A Dennis wicket mower, with additional tipped verti-cut cassette and a multi-dense brush

• A Supa Turfman aerator

• And an outfield triple mower

Susie Farley, Kentisbeare’s welfare officer, said the new equipment had been a godsend to the club and its groundsman Nigel Gillett.

“Nigel has just finished his 25th year as our voluntary groundsman, therefore it was only fitting for him to get  a few presents,” said Susie.

“Before the grant from Viridor, the club had run second-hand, unreliable machinery, which was costing a lot of money on repair bills, and making Nigel’s job preparing the wicket and ground harder each season.

“The new machinery has already shown to be more cost effective in fuel, and long-term running costs will be greatly reduced.

“The machinery will  be a real asset for ground preparation and it is hoped visiting teams will continue to enjoy playing at Kentisbeare.”

Kentisbeare run two Saturday teams in the Devon League, Sunday and Midweek teams, plus four junior teams.

The local school uses the ground for the, therefore the equipment will get plenty of work. This season the club hosted some East district cricket.

With the ever-growing junior section and two successful league teams, Kents are always looking for new players, junior and senior.
