DEVON’S pre-season preparations suffered a spanner in the works when today’s final warm-up friendly against Somerset 2nd XI was called off.The game – Devon’s last before they face Oxfordshire in the Minor Counties Cup at Bovey Tracey a week today – was originally due to be played at Exmouth.
Exmouth officials said ‘sorry – no can do’ on Thursday due to the soggy state of the Maer Ground, so the match was moved to Bovey Tracey.
Bovey’s ground failed an inspection yesterday morning, leaving Devon no change of finding an alternative venue.
The cancellation was a blow for new director of cricket Keith Donohue, who wanted to hone the team for the cup opener against Oxfordshire.
Donohue, who took over from Roger Newman late last year, is still getting to know the players at his disposal.
After two games he has a good idea of what’s in the talent pool but there were players he wanted one last look at before sketching out his cup squad.
The game was also a chance to re-connect with a handful of Devon old boys playing for Somerset who could feature for their home county as the season progresses.
