WINNING captain Andy Kingdon said getting most of the basics right was the key to the Devon League XI defeating the Devon Lions by five wickets at Sandford yesterday (Sunday).Matt Golding top scored with 75 and skipper Seb Benton made 56 in a Lions’ tally of 185 all out.
The League XI took early wickets through Mark Orchard (3-32) and Craig Eaves (1-25), kept plugging away through Jamie Tapper (2-31) and Chris Kelmere (0-43) while Benton and Golding were putting on 104 for the third wicket, then did an efficient mopping up job at the end.
Orchard came back to grab two wickets in an over – the slow full-toss and the long-hop proving the undoing for Adam Goodliffe and Will Squire respectively – the Max Curtis (3-4) took care of last man Matt Plowman.
The League got a decent start of 32 through Jaz Kalsi and Russ Discombe, then third-wicket pair Richard Baggs and Kelmere got bogged down for a while against the spin trio of Will Squire (2-21), Simon Ashplant and Matt Golding (2-16).
Kelmere and Baggs didn’t panic as the overs ticked down and having seen off the threat cut loose.
Baggs made 58 and Kelmere 59 as the League went from 54 for two to 158 for three.
Baggs was caught in the country swinging at Harry Booker, but Kelmere carried on until the target was eight to win.
There were 10 ball left when Kingdon smashed Dan Bowser past the stumps to complete victory.
“Apart from a few dropped catches – and I have to put my hands up to a couple – we did the basics pretty well,” said Kingdon.
“Everyone in the team had a point they wanted to make and that inspired them.
“We bowled well all the way through and I as really impressed by Jamie Tapper in the middle for us.
“Baggsie and Chris Kelmere did the right thing by biding their time and once they were settled and on top of the bowling they made it look easy.
“I hope the Devon management have taken note of what they have seen as there are some good players out there eager to play for the county.”
