Tuks Academy rising star hooks up with Lewdown

LEWDOWN go into the new season tempered by last season’s experiences in the A Division, which almost ended in disaster.

Losing South African Marco Marais to injury a third of the way through the season plunged Lewdown into all sorts of trouble.

Injuries started to mount up, results tailed off and Lewdown only dodged relegation by the skin of their teeth.

Adversity often binds teams together and Lewdown captain Harry Geering believes that to be the case.

“I think we will have come on for last year’s relegation scrap, being in the bottom two when our overseas left and just staying up,” said Geering.

“The lads are now more experienced and I believe if we steer clear of injuries, unlike last year, we will do well.

“We are all looking forward to the season ahead.”

Another reason Geering and co are looking forward to the season ahead could just be the recruitment that’s gone on during the winter.

Johan Wessels is the new overseas player.  He represented South Africa at the University World Cup and played at the Kia Oval, where he got man of the match in the semi-final and final victories against the West Indies and Australia.

“He also plays for the Tuks academy back in South Africa and we are very much looking forward to what he can do with both bat and ball,” said Geering.

Cornish All Blacks rugby player Billy Searle has joined from Exeter.

“He has been netting with us for a month or so as we are on his doorstep,” said Geering.

“Billy will be playing when not playing his first sport which is rugby. He will be a great addition with bat and ball.

“We have also signed Dale Chadwick from Chagford. He hasn't played much in recent years, but looking at what he can do in nets after a few games he should fit in well. “

Tom Pickbourne is another who's signed. He has moved to the village and previously played Forces cricket.

Still very much in place at Lewdown, despite overtures from the Premier Division, is left arm seamer Ben Williams.

Williams has been netting with Lancashire, the former club of Peter Lever, the ex-England bowler who does a bit of coaching at Lewdown.

Lewdown have lost Gary Sizmur to Bridestowe.

“Gary had an injury hit season with us last year and will be missed. The club wishes him well,” said Geering.
